News Team Henselite Jo and Jeremy take Golden Nugget Honours
August 24, 2016

New Zealand's Commonwealth Singles Champion, Jo Edwards, and World Cup Winner, Jeremy Henry, were crown the 2016 Golden Nugget Champions last week when they took home the trophies at the prestigious invitational event at Tweed Heads Bowls Club on the Gold Coast.

For 30 years, the Golden Nugget Invitational Singles has been one of the most prestigious singles tournaments in Australia.

Jo Edwards herself has lost count of how many times she has played in the event. "I have played in the Golden Nugget 10 or 11 times." she said. "It is a great event to play in because it is such an amazing field that is put together every year. It is fiercely competitive but social also. Tweed Heads is a great club and the volunteers are all so nice. It is also great to get away from our winter for a week!"

The toughest game for the Nelson ace came against Henselite team-mate and rising Australian star, Ellen Ryan, in the semi-final. "She stormed out of the blocks really well and continued to play well the whole game. I think I showed a lot of patience throughout the game. Ellen is a lovely person and has a big future in the game."

The close semi-final win was a good lead up to the final where she faced tough competitor and seasoned campaigner, Kelsey Cottrell, eventually taking out the title 25-16.

It was the 4th such singles title for Jo who is now only one behind the tournament's all time champion, Australia's Karen Murphy, with 5 wins.

For Warilla's World Cup Champion, Jeremy Henry, it was his first victory after overcoming Victoria's Aaron Wilson in the final.

Both Jo and Jeremy used Henselite Dreamline XGs which were the bowls of choice for the Nugget field with six out of 12 women and five out of 12 men using the popular Henselite model. Six of the 8 semi finalists used Dreamline XGs with Henselite team-mate, Jeremy Henry, taking the final honors in the men's draw.

"The conditions were pretty good the whole week," said Jo. "The last two days were a bit breezy but not too bad. My Dreamline XGs were great and handled the conditions really well."
