News Team Henselite Lisa Phillips Wins Australian Open Singles Crown
February 20, 2011

Young Victorian star Lisa Phillips has become the youngest bowler and only the second teenager to lift the Australian Open trophy after winning the coveted ladies singles title on Saturday. In doing so, the 17-year-old from Yallourn who plays pennant bowls at Richmond Union, pocketed eighteen thousand dollars.

"I'm still in shock," she said, shortly after her historic win over Victorian U-25 World Champion, Samantha Shanahan. "It's utterly unbelieveable. Getting to the final was so exciting but to win is a massive bonus."

While Lisa sailed through many of her games throughout the tournament, including a victory over Australian Indoor SIngles Champion, Katrina Wright, she didn't have it all her own way during the final. After securing the first set 8-5, Lisa found herself 6-0 down after the 4th end of the second.

"I knew I only had to tie," she said "so I thought if I could keep getting bowls in and close then I could win it."  And win it she did, staging a dramatic comeback to tie the second set 8-8 and take the title.

Using her Nova Blue Henselite Dreamlines, Lisa found her bowls suited the green and windy conditions well. "They were good..they turned on the narrow side but weren't too wide on the other side. I think they just knew what I wanted to do and did it."

Lisa will be attempting to add to her victory in 2011 and win back-to-back QLD Open Singles titles when that event gets underway in July.

And how will she be spending her winning cheque? "I'm going to buy a car," she said.
